Jack Irish: Set 1

New Aussie Suspense-Mystery-Thriller mix Series
Expect action with this Jack Irish bloke. A criminal lawyer gone rogue as debt collector, drunk, gambler, and more after his wife's murder. Guy Pearce becomes the character that was created from the crime novels of Peter Temple. Those books are being released in America now in parallel with the winning TV series. Even 100 minutes can't do justice to the novel, but the character focus is preserved, as well as the Melbourne setting, also the film location.
Some great orchestration and pop music mixed into the episodes.
Jack is a fallen, grieving lawyer who investigates dark lives--a series that is Aussie character driven.
I loved the touching scenes in the wood shop which included the old cabinet maker Charlie (Vadin Glowna) but alas he died prior to airing of the 2 episodes he acted so honestly through. There are also some great give-n-go moments in the local pub.

Jack Irish was a criminal lawyer but in this DVD set he's decided to switch sides after his wife is murdered. Now he's a part-time private investigator, trying to hunt down the same people he used to set free. On the side, he also works as a debt collector and both occupations get him into more than a little trouble. There are two episodes on this disk. The first is Bad Debts. When an old client turns up dead, Jack is pulled into the case and of course lots of corruption surrounds it. The second disc is Black Tide and in this one, an old friend of Jack's father comes to him for help when his son and his money go missing.

I have to say Guy Pearce does and amazing job in this role. His brooding presence coupled with that nice physique is just the type of semi-bad boy that makes my heart thump. Knowing the sad plight behind his behavior just makes him even more appealing because you know there's a good guy under all the trouble. I am definitely hoping to see a set 2 out for...

i've watched both episodes and they are the best. i am wondering if there will be more that are viewable on usa format? hope so. the three old boys in jack's second office are a wonderful touch.

Best of Foyle's War

FOYLE picks 6 of Anthony Horowitz PERFECTION
How did Foyle pick 6 `best' when all episodes are 6-star perfection? It's a good way to get initiated into Foyle's War, but let me warn you, the real deal is the 19 episode "Foyle's War: Series 1-5 - From Dunkirk to VE-Day" collection. Episodes are like eating chocolate covered peanuts, eat one after another and always want more.
This set is Foyle's (Michael Kitchen) favorites, all commendable. Episodes are packed with guest stars, too many to cite all. It's southern England WW2 home front history. DCS Foyle wants to do more for the war effort. Solving local murder is not enough in his mind. 1940s period-perfect sets, costumes flawless, as are the abundant threads of plot that tell of wartime civilian life like it's never been told before. Factual & often little known points. A drama-documentary almost.

This set includes the premier and introduces 3 other main characters close to Foyle. `SAM'antha...

THE BEST

LoveFoyle
I love the Foyle's War mysteries. This is the best show on TV/ I have watched them over and over again and never get tired. Foyle's War has to be the most authentic reproduction of the 40's and Michael Kitchen plays him to a British Tee. Can't get enough of Foyls's War. I can't wait on 2013 to be released. I have already pre-ordered it.

Agatha Christie's Poirot: Series 5

If you don't already own, or want this upgraded image, Poirot is 6 star.
REMASTERED set 5 is 8 Poirots. Belgian with `little gray cell' out-sleuths `The Yard.' David Suchet made Poirot famous. Philip Jackson plays Chief Inspector Japp in last 5 episodes. Hastings (Hugh Fraser) Poirot's right-hand is available for all but one episode. Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran) in 6 episodes. Agatha Christie stories always fantastic, but Suchet makes the film adaptations soar to new heights. Humor, scenic bliss, and costume lust rival the script writing. Poirot stories began a 1920s era. Trivially noteworthy, the fictional character was granted a 1975 NYTimes front page obit.

Odd that some are yet trying to sell (one reviewer promote) the older set, not remastered, for more $, up to $1000. New Series 5 is a value to new buyers or those who want the crisper image, Blu-ray level target. My vote's with newer, better, & America (even though it is Brit TV).

Classic collection gets the HD- re-master from the original camera films.
Series 5 returns to the one-hour format basing the stories on the Poirot Short Stories.

These had been previously released in various Poirot Collections using the old 1993 film to video transfers in standard definition. Now ITV has gone back to the original camera films to do new Hi-Definition transfers, making the series look fresh and new.

If you haven't seen this series on blu ray, then you haven't seen the series. These transfers are first rate and put any previous dvd and/or video release to shame.
